Ever want to drop a line in Kelsey Bass Ranch? You’ve heard of it, it’s that little member’s-only lake that’s well stocked with trophy bass just east of Turlock. The lake record of 15.8 is a testament to the big fish in these small waters. Most of us only hear about Kelsey in quiet conversations, usually walking away with envy. Here’s your chance to fish it for free.
The Modesto Castmasters are currently looking for boaters and other volunteers to help in their annual “Take a Special Person Fishing” day Saturday, May 10, 2008.They need a minimum of 30 boats to take handicapped “kids” out for a mini-tournament, consisting of 2-3 hours. The tournament starts at 8:00 a.m. and will be followed by a BBQ lunch and awards presentation for the kids. All kids participating in the tournament will receive hats, shirts, and a trophy, with special awards going for largest weights, big fish, etc. There will be a 2-fish limit for this tournament. The presentation will end around 3:00 p.m.
The kids will be furnished with rods, reels, and life jackets.
Boaters are open to come as early as 6:00 a.m. to prefish, get to know the water, and find their spots. At 8a, you’ll come to pick up your non-boater and hit the water. After the event boaters are welcome to stay and fish the rest of the day.Barbless hooks and Catch & Release are required on KelseyLake. It’s a great chance to catch some big fish and not burn a lot of fuel.
Non-boating volunteers are also welcome to help set up, staff the event and clean up.The option is also there to take a 3rd person on the boat with you to help out with your special guest. If there are too many boats, other children in the area are invited to join in.
If you’ve never participated in this type of event, it can be truly life-changing.It’s always fun, rewarding, and in this case, an opportunity to fish some once-in-a-lifetime water. That is, unless you come back again next year!!
